Spriggan

WHAT KIND OF A BOUNDER FAERIE WOULD YOU PICK?
From now through June 30, 2008, submit the name, species, description, and even a drawing of your personal Bounder Faerie, and you could win a drawing of your Bounder by professional comic book artist, Andy Kuhn. All submissions should be emailed to the contest judges at contest@greygriffins.com by 11:59 pm on June 30, 2008.

Spencer: I would have a Spriggan, so it could open up portals and take me places faster.

Author's Note:
Jon: I'd have to pick a Tundra Troll. I don't know where I'd hide him, but I bet nobody would mess with me!

Derek: Definitely a gargoyle

Sarah: I think a dragon would be a cool Bounder to have because of their intelligence and long life span. The only thing though is their size! Wish me luck on trying to convince my mom to let me keep a pet three times the size of my house, but of course, there are different species of dragons, correct? ^ . ^ As long as I'm stuck with a creature that has good intentions, I will be happy.

Author's Note:
Regarding dragons, you are quite correct. The can span in size from a drake, which can be as small as the length of your fingertips to your elbow, up to a dragon the size of Malice Striker, who when roused can spread his wings and blot out the sun. Vlad Dracula's Frost Dragon is about the size of a large crocodile, which wouldn't be a bad alternative. However, feeding any dragon could be a problem. I would highly suggest living somewhere like Montana where there is plenty of open range and wild game to let it hunt -- either that or a farm somewhere in the Midwest where your father would be willing to give up some livestock to help feed your dragon. But having a dragon around the house would definitely keep the coyotes and wolves away, so it would definitely serve a purpose!

Laura: Goblin. Why? Because they fit me. I've always had a liking towards the darker things, and the goblins are not only dark, but don't trust anyone. A 'greater' goblin foot soldier would be a specific choice. Big, bulky and mean. Such cute critters :).

Author's Note:
Jon: I have to admit that I find your selection very intriguing. All of us have a dark side, and the idea of a goblin Bounder is pretty cool. In World of Warcraft, I play as a member of the Horde -- a goblin warrior -- so I definitely understand.

Bridget: If I could choose, I'd pick a Dragon! Unfortunately, you rarely get to decide what you get and that's why I'm stuck with a Something. He's relatively humanoid, with the exception of pointed ears, horns, and a tail like a cat's. I found him in my closet.

Author's Note:
"Somethings" sound interesting... we can't wait to run into one!

Michael: I would want a Slayer Goblin if that?s possible, cause they are so sweet!

Author's Note:
You better look into getting a full body of armor in case it turns on you!

Jon A.: (I would choose) a Spriggin because it can open up portals everywhere.

Author's Note:
Yet another good reason to select a Spriggan. Maybe Max is luckier than we thought!

Corinne: I would probably pick a Spriggan.

Author's Note:
We're sensing a trend here...

Felicia: My Bounder would have to be a unicorn! They are beautiful, majestic creatures that have a magic imprint on people. When ever a person in a book sees a unicorn they are dazed and frozen by the gracefulness of the creature and it is like they have never seen what life is really about. They also have wonderful horns that heal people if they are hurt or have a wound. Unicorns can run so fast that it looks like they disappear and pop up in a new place each time they run. Imagine riding on the back of the fastest thing alive... what a thrill! You would be riding on the most beautiful animal, with its mane flowing in your face like a river of warm silk as its tail whips behind you like a flash of lightning.

Author's Note:
You should definitely write a book. Nicely done!

Logan: If I had a Bounder I'd chose a Brownie. Brownies fix and clean stuff while you're asleep. And for some reason when I was younger I'd go to bed with a clean room, and wake up to find it a disaster area (literally), I'd also like the little Brownie because of their size, they should be easy to hide. I'd also like to learn some of their magic just in case I run into a (you know what).

Author's Note:
Your logic is sound.

Nainoa: I would choose a Dragon. A creature with claws, razor teeth, the ability to fly, and if that wasn't enough, the ability to blow fire out of its mouth. I'd like a blue male, just large enough to carry a full grown human so I could fly on its back. That would be awesome.

Author's Note:
We're with you. That would be SUPER awesome!

Jake: If I had a Bounder it would be a Doppelganger because I could have it change into any person so that I could gain access to lots of things, or have it take out any serious enemy I might have.

Author's Note:
Maybe you could start a private investigation service together. You'd easily be the world's best!

Zack: I would definitely pick a gargoyle. Their big, strong, and would always be by my side.

Author's Note:
It's hard to argue with logic like that!

bradybunch: If I were to have a Bounder, I would want it to be a Kobold (not all Kobolds are bad, right?). No one could kill them or me with iron. Also, they are strong and look cool.

Author's Note:
Excellent points!

Danny: I would love to have a Spriggan, because if I could tame it as my Bounder it could turn into anything at all. If I wanted, I would be able to ride a Hippogriff, or I could ask it to turn into a monster and scare my lil bro. Spriggans r so kool.

Author's Note:
Now that you mention it, utilizing a Spriggan's shapeshifting ability to scare siblings isn't a bad idea at all. Nice choice!

Kaili: I would choose a Snatcher because they seem like a very cool pet to have. Come on, something that fast that would do things for you. Of course I woudn't treat it like a slave though.

Author's Note:
There could definitely be advantages to being bound to a Snatcher -- not least of which is that it wouldn't be able to snatch YOU any longer!

Jenny: I would have a gargoyle or a Tundra Troll.

Author's Note:
We're right there with you!

Nathan: I would want to have a Doppelganger as a Bounder Faerie if it can take the powers of the faerie it changes into. If it can't I would want to have a fireball pixie as a bounder. The reason I would pick it is it can manipulate fire so well making it very dangerous. Hopefully, it would be less trouble than a spriggan. Especially since you're bound for life!

Author's Note:
We're right there with you!

Anna: It would be cool if I had a pixie named Serena that was brown with yellow eyes.

Author's Note:
There are quite a few young ladies who definitely feel the same.

Lelynn: If I could choose a Bounder it would be a Spriggan. They can shape-shift into anything and that would be so cool. Especially if it could scare my sisters. Hehehe.

Author's Note:
No comment (but that sounds pretty fun)!

Sam: I'm thinking it would be really cool if I could have a Puka. I like the stuff they can turn into, and they're kind of creepy, so I could scare people. But they're supposed to be kind of good, too, so I could probably help people and stuff.

Author's Note:
Pukas are WAY cool! Nice pickin', Sam!

A. Tross (The Last Surviving Member of the Blood Rider of the Shadowlands Cavalry): I would absolutely have to pick a dragon or a unicorn. And for the dragon, I'd like a classic European dragon. I'd prefer one of the darker dragons -- I've always sorta been on the dark side :-) If I could pick what he looked like, he'd be all black with silver talons. I'm not sure if I could convince my parents -- I can't even have a horse :-(

If it was a unicorn, he would look like the horse that I was offered for free, but can't take -- tall, muscular -- resembling a thoroughbred horse, all black and majestic. I know a bit more about unicorns than dragons, so his base (of his horn) would be a ruby -- which I've heard is rare -- which I think would look pretty cool against the coal black coat.

Author's Note:
Ruby against black would look amazing!

Tokeru: I'd have a Gargoyle. They're simple. Even though in the book a Gagoyle attacked Ernie, Gargoyles are supposed to protect humans and they seem realy tough, They also come in differnt shapes it would be really cool to have my very own special type of Gargoyle.

Author's Note:
You are quite right about Gargoyles being (typically) "good". The gargoyle(s) that attacked Ernie and the Grey Griffins in the first book were definitely under influence of an enchantment to steal the Codex Spiritus. Here is the description from the glossary at the end of the books...

Gruesome statues carved from stone, gargoyles stand guard upon cathedral rooftops, warding off evil spirits that would threaten both the church and the surrounding village. Legend claims gargoyles would come to life at night when the villagers were most vulnerable, only to return to their resting places before the sun rose.

Michael: I would like a gargoyle because they are great!

Author's Note:
We're starting to sense a trend here...

Gabriel: I think a spriggan would be the coolest Bounder because since it can shapeshift you could have mainly any faerie (or anything else for that matter) at your service. You would also be able to travel to places really quick since it can open portals easily.

Author's Note:
So it looks like a run between a Spriggan and a gargoyle as the most popular. Interesting...

Nick: I would have to say a Frost Dragon is the way to go. If it's good enough for Vlad, it's good enough for me.

Author's Note:
It's hard to argue with that logic!

Sharon: Well it's a hard question... Since werewolves aren't faries, I guess I can't choose them. Vampires don't exist (for now), and ghosts aren't in the story so far... Well then I guess I'll choose a gargole like Throckmorn (Baron Lungdren) and Azrael (Lord Sumner). They are vigilant watchers, frightening to the eye, and do not need food or sleep. A second choice would be a fireball pixie. They are strong, magical, and hot tempered - like me!

Author's Note:
Fantastic choice!

Blake: I would have a Frost Giant, because it could protect me when I get in trouble. Also, if I'm in a snowball fight, I could dominate with the Frost Giant because he could be good camouflage in the snow and he could chuck snow clumps at my enemies.

Author's Note:
Frost Giants certainly qualify as excellent protectors. But here's a question... who would win in a snowball fight betwee your Forst Giant and Will Ferrel's character in ELF?

M Shaw: I would have a gargoyle for a Bounder.

Author's Note:
Clearly gargoyles have jumped ahead of Spriggan's in the overall vote for most popular Bounder Faerie.

Will: If I had a Bounder I would probably have a Fire Dragon about the size of Vlad's (Frost Dragon), but it would be a brown base color but the tip of the tail, the head, and the hands and feet with black talons and four black wings -- 2 above the other -- and It would be able to fly and breath small bursts of fire.

Author's Note:
You have piqued our curiosity... can you send us a drawing of your dragon with four wings? It sounds terribly interesting.

Daniel: If I could choose a Bounder, I would pick a Doppelganger. It's like having all the faeries in one, and they get the powers of the faeries or creatures they turn into. For instance if I wanted a portal I would tell my Doppelganger to transform into a Spriggan so I could have a portal.

Author's Note:
Nice thinking. We'll have to brush up on our Doppelgange faerie lore to ensure the can capture all the powers... but if it's true, that's a pretty awesome choice!

Max: If I could choose what Bounder I had, I would choose to have a Shadow (a good one if it's possible). I think that would be really cool since they can spy really well and can attack from the shadows, so they're kinda like a Rogue, which is my kind of style.

Author's Note:
Hmmm... very interesting. I wonder if there are any "good" shadows...

WHAT IS A BOUNDER FAERIE? Bounders are faeries that are bound to a human, whom they serve and protect for the rest of that person's life. Generally, the 'binding' process occurs when the human saves the faerie's life or, in some instances, completes a quest.
