NOVEMBER 2007
SPARE TIME (What's That?)
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? (Sam)
Derek: I play the piano, the guitar, I read A LOT, I collect comic books, play video games, mountain hiking - I always have to be doing something.
Jon: I love to go to movies, read books and watch documentaries about World War II (my grandfather fought in the Battle of the Bulge, was captured by the Germans and then placed in a detainment camp -- he survived, but would never tell me any stories -- the memories were too painful), watch football (Minnesota Vikings and ASU Sun Devils), play Madden 08 on my XBOX 360, read comic books, hang out with my friends, and spend as much time with my family as I can.
BOOK REPORT
Q: I wrote to you about a year ago because I was doing my book report on The Revenge of the Shadow King. Guess what? This year, I am doing my book report on The Rise of the Black Wolf. This book was even better than the first! I really liked the part when they met Vlad Dracula. I got an A on my book report last year, and I think I will again this year. When is your next Grey Griffins book coming out? (Jon)
First and foremost, congratulations on the A! That is awesome, and we're glad we could play a small role. In terms of Book 3: The Fall of the Templar, it is officially set for release on January 1, 2008. However, it will probably be in stores some time in December. We'll keep you updated on it.
WHEN "REAL LIFE" INFLUENCES STORIES
Q: Did you somehow expierience these things in the book somehow, or did you get nightmares like Max gets, or what? (Matt)
Derek: A lot of the stuff we write about was based on things that happened to us in the past. For instance, the scene in The Revenge of the Shadow King where the Slayer Goblin sneaks into Max's bedroom, and Max has to run up to the attic to escape? That was based on a nightmare I had when I was about your age. There are so many things that inspire us and give us ideas that it makes it easy to write books like this.
FELLOW C.S. LEWIS FANS
Q: I was online and noticed you are a fellow C.S. Lewis fan. I love his books! (Rhonda)
Jon: I am indeed a fellow Clive Staples "Jack" Lewis fan -- from Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters, to The Chronicles of Narnia. It's all great stuff! By coincidence, my name is J.S. Lewis -- and that isn't a pen name. It stands for Jon Samuel Lewis. So I share the same last name as C.S. Lewis, and the same first name (though a differnt spelling) with J.R.R. (John) Tolkien. How cool is that?
On a side note, I don't know why, but I hated my middle name growing up. Samuel just seemed odd to me. Then I discovered I was named after one of my family's ancestors (somewhere on my mom's side of the family) from the Wild West: Sam Bass. He was a train robber as I understand it. I'd like to think he modeled his nefarious career after Robin Hood, stealing from the rich to give to the poor, but I kind of doubt it. I actually saw a street named after him somewhere between Austin and Dallas, Texas when Derek and I were visiting some schools there.
